Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up every player's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players battling for the high, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it's not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
