Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost most times. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The definite advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would often play against one another. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena ever. He headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
