Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he could about the game. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the detrimental comments from others kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker players on the planet.

Phil started competing intently after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the casinos in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning period and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed a number of the well known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an eternal love for poker. He says that he's learning every day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. Phil knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Although Phil has won some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
