Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It's a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player's, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in nearly all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free's up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there's no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/low offers an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it's worth your time to compete in Omaha hi-low.
