Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved playing different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's 1st two years were tough as he would play many hours and lost most times. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The actual improvement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently wager against each other. He had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
